CD71

Background

Transferrin receptor (CD71) is a cell surface proliferation marker that participates in the uptake of iron by cells. CD71 has been shown to show strong cell membrane and cytoplasmic staining in all erythrocyte precursors of normal and dysplastic bone marrow biopsies. CD71 showed the most specific staining compared to other red blood cell precursor biomarkers, with a clear and distinct staining pattern that did not label mature red blood cells. Therefore, CD71 may be a reliable red blood cell marker in bone marrow.
