Background

Nestin is a type VI intermediate filament protein expressed in dividing cells during the early stages of development in the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and in myogenic and other tissues.Nestin is generally considered as a reasonable neuron marker. However, recent studies have shown that it can also be expressed in other types of cells, such as endothelial cells.Nestin can not only verify the most primitive neuroepithelium, but also other embryonic tissues, so it is not specific to the central nervous system. Nestin can be expressed in almost all gliomas and melanoma (primary melanoma and metastatic melanoma), but not in any metastatic cancer.
