Background

Vimentin is one of the intermediate filament proteins, which is an important component of the cytoskeleton of eukaryotes. It is very important to the integrity and stability of the cytoskeleton. Vimentin is expressed in a variety of mesenchymal cell types: fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and many other cell types derived from mesoderm, such as mesothelioma and ovarian granulosa cells. However, vimentin is often replaced by desmin in non-vascular smooth muscle cells. Vimentin is expressed in many different tumors, especially those derived from mesenchymal cells. Vimentin combined with other markers are used to identify mesenchymal tumors and malignant melanoma. In addition, vimentin can be used as an effective marker of tissue processing.
